Project 10^100: Google’s $10m Eco Contest

25 09 2008

If you could suggest a unique idea that would help as many people as possible, what would it be?

Thats the question set by Google’s Project 10 to the 100th (an equation to which the answer is googol)

Google is offering up to $10million in the project which encourages people to submit ideas for changing the world and then vote on the ones which have the potential to help the most people:

Never in history have so many people had so much information, so many tools at their disposal, so many ways of making good ideas come to life. Yet at the same time so many people (in all walks of life) could use some help, in small ways and big

Google want to use their mass appeal and reach to help large numbers of people, especially those with urgent needs, with simple, cost-effective ideas that will have an impacts for years to come. Previous ideas were offered as inspiration, including the Hippo Water Roller, a container that can hold 110 litres (24 gallons) and can be easily rolled on the ground with a handle, meaning no heavy carrying for villagers in places such as Africa.

There are seven categories for idea submissions, including sustainable energy use, environment, health, education, shelter, encouraging communities, and building opportunities to help people better provide for themselves and their families. An eighth category is simply titled
“everything else'”

The submission deadline is October 20th and Google employees will select 100 entries to be made public in January 2009. Google users will then vote to select 20 semi-finalists, with an advisory board choosing the winners in mid-February. Google will distribute the $10million to fund as many as five ideas, although they is quick to emphasise this project is not about “prize money”, with the reward being…

…good karma and the satisfaction of knowing that your idea might truly help a lot of people
